MORGAN HILL HISTORY AND DEMOGRAPHICS
Morgan Hill was incorporated in 1906 and enjoys a rich history of agriculture and controlled growth. Morgan Hill is named after it's founder, Hiram Morgan Hill. When the train stopped in town, the Engineer would yell out “Morgan Hill”, thus naming the town. The ‘gem of South Santa Clara County’ is 12.0 square miles and is just 20 miles south of San Jose and Silicon Valley; 75 miles south of San Francisco; 50 miles east of Monterey and 50 miles southeast of Santa Cruz. This great location provides residents with a wide variety of cultural, recreational and professional outlets to pursue.
In 2018 the population count is approximately 48,000 with a projected growth in the next five years of 6%. Morgan Hill has a controlled growth initiative and allows a limited number of new home construction projects per year. Builders must meet a variety of qualifications in order to receive approvals, making for a well planned community with smart growth in mind.
The average age of our residents is 38 and the community has approximately 15,600 households. The median household income is in the $94,000.00 range with the average household income approximately $129,759. Almost 70% of our residents own their homes, with a median home price of $940,000. A vast majority of residents work in the white collar sector, with 32% working in the blue collar areas. The largest employer in the city is the Morgan Hill Unified School district.
Morgan Hill is very proud to be one of a very few sources for a type of semi-precious gemstone named poppy jasper. This wonderful gemstone can be on private lands, not accessible to the public. Examples are on display at the Morgan Hill Museum and at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. The local Poppy Jasper Film Festival is also named after the mineral.
Morgan Hill holds many annual events including the Mushroom Mardi Gras; Taste of Morgan Hill; Downtown Beer Crawl; Wine Passport Weekends; the Friday Night Music Series during the summer months, and other wonderful family oriented events.
